Child Care Tips for Parents

PSA #1 - Quality child care can make a difference in a child's life. Choosing the right care is an important decision for a parent. When looking for child care, take time to visit more than one. Observe the caregivers with the children, ask lots of questions, and get references from parents with children in the program.

The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #2 - Parents, when searching for child care, look for a caregiver who is warm, loving, and flexible. Find out if she has training and experience with children the same age as your child. Are there are enough caregivers for the number of children? Find out if the program registered or licensed. If not, why not?

PSA #3 - Parents, find child care that has many age-appropriate activities planned and on the daily schedule.  Are there are large areas for play and outdoor play time on the schedule? The playthings, equipment, and materials should be safe and right for your child's age.

PSA #4 - Good child care facilities are clean and safe.  Areas for food preparation, eating, and diapering are disinfected before and after use.  Cribs, high chairs, and play equipment meet safety standards.  Caregivers and children wash hands often to prevent the spread of germs.

PSA #5 - Is your child's child care safe? Does it have working smoke detectors in areas where care is provided? Cleaning materials must be stored in locked cabinets away from food. Is there a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher? Toys and play equipment should be in good repair.
