Child Care Tips for Parents

PSA #1 - Are you a new parent looking for child care? Take time to find the best person to take care of your baby while you are working.  It is an important decision!  Don’t take the first opening you hear about.  Visit more than one program before deciding.

The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #2 - Babies learn when they are exposed to things they can see, hear, touch, smell, and taste.  Be sure your baby will have those experiences at child care.  A good caregiver will talk to an infant during feeding, dressing, diapering, and play routines.

The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #3 - When enrolling your infant in child care, find out if you can stop in to visit and for some feedings when your schedule permits.  Good caregivers welcome parents at any time.  They work together with parents to provide good child care.

The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #4 -With the weather getting warmer, children are spending more time outdoors.  This is healthy and good for children.  Parents, find out about the outdoor area and play time where your child goes to child care.  See if the outdoor area and play equipment are safe.  Are the activities right for the ages of the children?

The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #5 - To be sure an outside play area is safe for the children, a caregiver should check it daily.  The sand box needs to have a cover and play areas clear of debris.  Is there a shady area where children can get out of the sun to play?  A trained caregiver will have drinking water outside for the children, a first aid kit, emergency numbers, and a cell phone.

The Pennslvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #6 - Are you a child care provider with a busy schedule and finding it difficult to attend training workshops?  The Penn State Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has ways you can earn your training hours on their Web site at www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.  There are also child care tips, newsletters, activity ideas, snack recipes, and links to other Web sites.  You can also find information about children’s issues at Pennsylvania’s DPW Web site at www.dpw.state.pa.us.
