CHILD CARE TIPS FOR PARENTS

PSA #1 - Parents, improve your child's care by working as a team with your child's caregiver. Find out how your child's day went every day. Keep the child care provider informed about things at home that might affect your child's moods and behaviors. Child care providers are required to keep information about children and their families confidential. The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #2 - Try to visit your child's child care program whenever possible. Volunteer to help during special events or field trips. Read the daily schedule and ask your child about what he has done that day. Read notices and newsletters that are sent home. Be alert for schedule changes. The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #3 - Parents can help child care providers by sending in needed items on time. This includes a change of clothing and appropriate items for outdoor play, such as boots, hats, and mittens. Keep emergency information in your child's file updated. This includes numbers where you can be reached at all times and information about others who have permission to pick up your child from child care. The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #4 - When choosing child care, it is important to find the right caregiver for your child. Good child care providers are warm, caring and understanding with children. Visit several programs, ask lots of questions, and spend time talking with and observing the caregiver with the children. The Pennsylvania State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.
