CHILD CARE TIPS FOR PARENTS

PSA #1 - Parents, when looking for a child care program, find out what the children do all day. Some people think, “All they do is play!” Playing is what children need to be doing to learn new skills. Find out what kinds of activities are on the daily schedule before enrolling your child in a child care program. The Penn State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #2 - A good child care program will have a variety of activities on the daily schedule. The activities, playthings, and play equipment will be appropriate for the ages of the children. Trained caregivers are always looking for new ideas.. The Penn State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #3 - Good child care programs have both quiet and active play scheduled every day. There should be block play, art activities, music, dramatic play, and reading stories. Space for activities like running, riding bikes, and climbing activities is important. Children of all ages need time to be outdoors every day. The Penn State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #4 - It is important for children to develop creative skills. Look for a child care program for your child that has art activities scheduled every day. A trained child care provider will have a variety of art materials for children to use. Kids need to explore the materials and choose what to do with them. The Penn State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #5 - Children develop problem solving, decision making, and other thinking skills while doing art activities. They expand the ways they learn. It helps children feel good about themselves when their art work is displayed. The Penn State University Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Program has information on children's issues for early childhood educators, child care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care Web site at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.

PSA #6 - Anyone who takes care of children can find information about children’s issues on the Web site for Penn State Cooperative Extension’s Better Kid Care Program at: www.betterkidcare.psu.edu.
