CHILD CARE TIPS FOR PARENTS
PSA #1 - Parents, while visiting a center
or home when you are looking for child care, find out the caregiver’s
philosophy of discipline for children. Make sure you are comfortable with
the caregiver’s beliefs. A well-trained caregiver will know that
discipline means to teach, not punish, and will focus on showing the children
the right way to do something.

care providers, and parents on the Better Kid Care web site at

PSA #2 - Child care providers teach children
correct behavior by modeling what to do. They carefully explain rules
and guidelines so children understand what is expected. Rules are stated
in a positive way, telling children what they may do, not what they may
not do.

PSA #3 - When teaching a child what to
do, a good child care provider is fair and consistent. The caregiver will
encourage a child to figure out how to resolve a conflict in a positive
way and expect the best from that child.

PSA #4 - When children
are content and happy, they tend to be eager to explore new things and
ready to learn. A good caregiver will provide the children in her care
with this type of atmosphere. There will be large areas for active play,
indoors and out. Books and art materials will be accessible to the children.

PSA #5 -If you are enrolling your child
in child care, find a caregiver who is warm, loving, and has training
in child development. Find a bright, cheerful facility that is clean.
Does the caregiver give the children lots of attention? See if the children’s
artwork and projects are displayed for everyone to enjoy.

about what children learn when they play, or perhaps ways to make and
use puppets, or maybe you want to know what is normal development for
a child? Information about these and many other children’s issues
can be found on the Penn State Better Kid Care Web site at
