"Time to Adapt" Ideas

September 27, 2001 Satellite Broadcast

A simple change can make a big difference! Try some of these simple ways to help children use materials more easily.

For picking up or grasping:

Foam Hair Curlers
Remove the plastic piece from a foam hair curler. Slide the foam over a pencil, crayon, or paintbrush to make it easier to hold.

Clip Clothespins
Open a clip clothespin and fasten a crayon or pencil inside. Have the child hold the clothespin to color or "write" with the pencil.

Cabinet Knobs or Drawer Pulls (screw-on type)
Put a hole through puzzle pieces so you can attach a cabinet knob or drawer pull with a screw. The knob will be on the top of the puzzle piece (making it easier for the child to pick it up -- the screw will be on the bottom side).

Pipe Cleaners or Aquarium Tubing
Use pipe cleaners or 1/4 inch aquarium tubing (from a pet supply store) for stringing instead of yarn or shoelaces.

Tops of Eyedroppers
Remove the tops of eyedroppers (the soft parts you squeeze) and glue them tightly to the tops of puzzle pieces. The children can easily grasp the rubber part, making it easier for them to pick up the puzzle pieces.

Pencil Erasers
Pencil erasers (the kind that slide over your old pencil eraser) make great knobs for puzzle pieces. Glue an eraser to the top of each puzzle piece.

Make things easier to see:

Marker Outlines
Use a permanent marker to trace around puzzle pieces on the cardboard holder. This will make it easier for children to see where the puzzle pieces belong.
