"Time to Adapt" Ideas

October 25, 2001 Satellite Broadcast

A simple change can make a big difference! Try some of these simple ways to help children use materials more easily.

Dish Brush Scrubber
Makes a wonderful tool for painting.

Foam Dish Scrubber
Pour a mixture of glue and water or paint into the handle for a child to sponge onto paper.

Liquid Bingo Marker Tubes
Some children may find the tubes easier to hold than paintbrushes for painting.

Foam Trays (from packaged meat, vegetables, or fruit
Wash tray very well. Cut slits into the styrofoam. Slide playing cards into the slits so the cards will stand upright.

Telephone Books or Store Catalogs
Old telephone books or store catalogs make great game card holders. Measure about three inches from the binding side of an old telephone book or store catalog. Cut through the book, leaving the binding with three inches of attached pages. Use strong rubber bands or glue to firmly hold together the pages on the two short sides. Stand the book with the binding side down on the table. Slide cards between the pages to hold them upright while children play.

Game Dice
Check the auto department in stores for large dice to hang from car rearview mirrors. The large dice are easier for children to use for playing games.
